Merged up Towns

Just thought I should mention it, but Shirasawa and Tone aren't separate villages in Tone-gun anymore. They merged into Numata-shi back in February.

Same goes for Akabori, Sakai and Azuma from Sawa-gun. They're all part of Isesaki now.

Ogo, Kasukawa, and Miyagi of Seta-gun are now parts of Maebashi.

Nitta, Ojima, and Yabuzukahon are now parts of Ota.

Niisato and Kurohone are now parts of Kiryu.

Next year Takasaki will merge with four other towns as well.

Ah, right.

Forgot about that. Thanks. I was moving the categories from the old site and didn't think about what changes have occurred. I guess I'll have to manually edit any entries that used the old regions when I change the categories. Damn.

names

I'm not sure what to do. My town is merging with Takasaki next year, only it will actually be an island with other towns inbetween. But still technically Takasaki. Should I really just get rid of the old place names, or is there something I can change them to so the regions will still make sense?

Well...

You could always make subdivision with in towns. I mean, even my little town has areas (which roughly correspond to the old villages that merged 30 years ago). If you could just find out things like that, it might solve the problem. Can you do a second level like that? Gunma -> Takasaki -> natoka-machi?

That's a good idea. Some of

That's a good idea. Some of the cities have a lot of 'towns' in them though. Even the towns have all of those smaller subdivisions.

Location, location, location

Keep the traditional names. They are real places.

I would want to know where something is located, not what administrative district it is in. Better to know that the Apple Store is in Shibuya District rather than just in Tokyo. Better to know that the 亀沢Onsen is in Kurabuchi, and that I have another hour to drive to the west, rather than to think it's in downtown Takasaki.

Midori Shi

Keeping the old names is going to be a problem. All the new people coming in the summer will be looking at new maps and road signs and going "What?" what with all the recent town mergers. The latest is the creation of 'Midori-shi' which used to be Kasakake-machi, Omama-machi, and Azuma-mura. The city runs through the middle of Kiryu, which is a little confusing as well.

is there a list?

Do you know if there's a list, or map, or both, of all the merger changes that I could look at? It's going to be a pain changing the entries. I'll probably have to go through them and change the database entries by hand.

A list there is.

There is a list of all the recent mergers here at wikipedia. The only one not on there yet is the one for Midori-shi, which officially merges today.

This map is also accurate except for Midori-shi.

I can make a nicer map if you want.

I think that keeping the old

I think that keeping the old names aren't a major problem as many people still call the places by their traditional name. For example, ikaho recently merged with shibukawa but it is still called ikaho. Instead, I would keep the names but make colored areas. For example, the numata mergers are one color, the shibukawa ones another, takasaki another, etc etc.

Town Sections

Yeah, keeping the town section names would be helpful. However, we'll at least need to put in the new names for the towns. Right now, the towns are listed in the wrong districts. For example, currently Shiraswa and Tone are listed under Tone-gun, but they're not part of it. Maybe they could be listed under the heading of their city instead? Something like: Numata - Shirasawa. Usui-gun doesn't even exist anymore. And Nitta-gun won't exist as of this afternoon.

areas corrected

I corrected the districting. I just put all of the old towns under their new cities or districts. Wasn't quite sure what to do with Agatsuma and Azuma. They're both under Higashiagatsuma. Are those areas distinct anymore? Should I just leave it as Higashiagatsuma? The same thing happened up with Minakami.
