Nakanojo Town - 中之条町Submitted by Anonymous on Sat, 2005/09/24 - 15:26.
Location Description: Nakanojo Town is a central cross roads in Northwestern Gunma. The main draw of Nakanojo is Shima Onsen, located in the north of Town. Nakanojo also has many interesting spots to visit. The history museum near the town office is an old Meiji era school. There is also a place called the Yakuoen, which is a sort of herb amusement park. Lots of really good food (all you can drink/eat beer garden too!). There are 3 big festivals in Nakanojo. In winter, there is the Tori-oi Matsuri where these large drums are wheeled through town so that everyone can bang on them for good luck. In the summer, August has the Nakanojo Festival, and September has the Ise-machi Festival. Nakanojo is known mainly due to the fact that it is the home town of ex-prime minister Keizo Obuchi (小渕恵三). Location Directions: by Train From Ueno, and various points along the way (e.g. Takasaki), you can take the 草津 express train, though this has an extra charge associated with it. This is a big white train. In all cases, get of at Nakanojo Station (中之条駅). by Car From the north, get off at 沼田I.C. (Numata Interchange) and take Route 120 through Numata to the big intersection with Route 17. There you are going to go straight, which is Route 145. Take that all the way through Takayama Village, and you will end up in Nakanojo.
