Location Description:
Showa Village is on the eastern side of Mt. Akagi in Northern Gunma. Showa is famous for its beautiful views and its vegetables. Showa is one of Japan's largest producers of konnyaku, a root that is dried, powdered, and made into a stiff jelly. (It occasionally shows up in school lunch in a triangle shape.) High in fiber, it is often eaten as a diet food, or to ensure regularity.
Showa Village Festivals:
Yuki Matsuri (Snow Festival): The second week of February. There's a concert, snow sculpture contest, dog sledding/snowmobiling, and a fireworks show in the evening.
Aki Matsuri (Fall Festival): Various events, food booths. Every year they prepare a batch of konnyaku soup in a giant 2 meter wide pot which serves 4000. The soup is free as well as entrance to Showa onsen.
